About the manufacturer:

SATAKE CUTLERY MFG. Co., Ltd.” was founded in 1947 in Seki City. The company’s goal is to produce reliable and durable kitchen tools and “SATAKE CUTLERY MFG. Co., Ltd.” continues its mission – adhering to the highest quality standards, creating and producing the most advanced kitchen knife models by combining long-standing forging traditions with modern technologies. Japan’s kitchen knives carefully crafted by skilled masters are the result of their passion for their work. Seki City, where the factory is located, is renowned for its unique and traditional forging methods with a history of over 700 years.

It began in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) when a famous swordsmith “Motoshige” moved to Seki and started forging his swords, teaching others the trade. Seki was surrounded by large pine forests where the blacksmiths could obtain the necessary charcoal, and the suitable water made it an ideal place for sword production. Over time, the number of masters grew, and more than 300 blacksmiths lived here, producing the finest samurai swords during the Muromachi period (1336-1573). Seki City flourished as a samurai sword production center and became known throughout Japan.

After the Meiji period, the sword ban decree “Haitorei” (1876) significantly reduced the demand for swords, but the masters adapted their refined forging skills to the production of knives and agricultural tools. Even now, Seki City and its surroundings are known as one of the most famous knife production areas globally. The kitchen knives produced here account for more than 50% of the Japanese market and are valued for the highest quality standards.”
