About the manufacturer:

SATAKE CUTLERY MFG. Co., Ltd.” was founded in 1947 in Seki city. The company’s goal is to produce reliable and long-lasting kitchen tools, and SATAKE CUTLERY MFG. Co., Ltd.” continues its mission of maintaining the highest quality standards, creating and producing the most advanced kitchen knife models by combining long-standing forging traditions with modern technologies. Japanese kitchen knives carefully crafted by skilled masters are the result of their passion for their work. And Seki city, where the factory is located, is renowned for its unique and traditional forging methods with a history of more than 700 years.

It started in the Kamakura era (1185–1333) when the famous swordsmith Motoshige moved to Seki and began forging his swords here and teaching others this craft. Surrounding Seki, there were large pine forests where blacksmiths could obtain the necessary charcoal, and there was also suitable water here, so Seki city became a suitable place for making swords. Over time, the number of masters increased, and more than 300 blacksmiths lived here and produced the finest samurai swords in the Muromachi era (1336-1573). Then Seki city flourished as a center for samurai sword production and became known throughout Japan.

After the prohibition of swords declared during the Meiji period in the “Haitorei” decree (1876), their demand significantly decreased, but the masters applied their perfected forging skills to the production of knives and agricultural tools. Even now, Seki city and its surroundings are known as one of the most famous knife-making areas in the world. The kitchen knives produced here occupy more than 50% of the Japanese market and are valued for the highest quality standards.
